An invaluable example of European architectural art, constructed by coffee barons who raised the money by a self-imposed coffee tax during the 19th century to stimulate culture in Costa Rica . You will see the Bellavista Fortress, which was closed in 1948 when the army was abolished. The fortress has reopened as the National Museum and has a collection of interesting pre Columbian artefacts. San Jose's great supermarket is the Mercado Central, where independent vendors sell virtually anything you'd ever need.
